Networking/Telecommunication Platforms

Welcome for all , Before I start talking about the Subject ( Networking/Telecommunication Platforms ) I will take you to a small trip about the world from old time to the present day
 


 Since ago years  the ways of communication between people and rulers and states were very few and limited ,messages arrive either to be via carrier pigeon or horse and after that  they used the ship and train This means that they often lack the speed and accessibility of information and great of effort , with the development of times and the evolution of human brains the people be able to think and invent and innovate. Where we see today that the communications technology began to expand and develop rapidly and useful .






Global value chains, mobile workforces, social networking, pervasive video, information overload,  rapid technological change, large heterogeneous environments, and need of great companies to provide customers with products that ensure reliable, cost-effective network service :this is the new normal . This means that these companies need a platform that has a visionary strategy that enables them to develop standards-compliant network management solutions for a continually changing environment to connect people, information and teams, helping to enable comprehensive and effective collaboration.(ie. We need to Networking/telecommunication platforms )
 
Platforms in general 
 
In the computer world, a "platform" typically refers to a computer's operating system. For example, a Dell computer running Windows XP would be considered to be running on a Windows platform. An iMac, on the other hand, runs on the Macintosh platform. It is a more generic way of referring to a computer's operating system than having to specify, for example, Windows XP Professional SP 2, or Mac OS X 10.3.5. The term platform is often used when referring to what kind of computer systems a certain software program will run on.
Platforms
1)    ( Hardware + Software ) based platform Eg. any OS .
 That means OS is type of platform which contains both ( H/W + S/W
2)    Software based platform eg. platforms like .NET or JAVA platform

Networking/Telecommunication platforms
 
         $150 billion annually spent on networking and telecommunications hardware
         $700 billion annually spent on telecommunications services, e.g. phone and Internet connectivity
         Local area networking still dominated by Microsoft Server (about 75%) but strong growth of Linux challenges this dominance .
         Enterprise networking almost entirely Linux or UNIX
         Cisco, Lucent, Nortel, and Juniper Networks continue to dominate networking hardware.
         The telecommunications services market is highly dynamic with MCI, AT&T, and Sprint providing most trunk line services for both phone and Internet.
         Growth of non-telephone Wi-Fi and Wi-Max services, and Internet telephony .

 
Description :Telecommunications platforms provide voice and data connectivity /wide area networking and internet access.

4.     Juniper  networks .

The Integration of Computing and Telecommunications Platforms :
·        Increasingly computing takes place over the network.
·        Client level: integration of cell phones and PDAs (Example: Palm Treo)
·        Television, video, and radio move toward digital production.
·        Server level: The integration of voice telephone and the Internet bring  together two historically separate and distinct global networks.
·        The network in many respects is the source of computing power.
Importance Of Networking/Telecommunication Platforms :
·        Connect co-workers, partners, vendors, and customers with the information and expertise they need .
·        Access and share video on the desktop, on the road, and on-demand, as easily as making a phone call .
·        Facilitate better interactions, dynamically bringing together individuals, virtual workgroups, and teams .
·        Extend the corporate network so mobile workers can be productive anywhere
·        Innovate across the value chain by integrating collaboration and communications into applications and business processes.

IT Infrastructure  is a general term to encompass all information technology assets (hardware, software, data), components, systems, applications, and resources. It can be general describe as six part component on hardware platform, operation systems platform, software application, internet & networking platform, data storage & security management.
  
 
Infrastructure Components
IT infrastructure is composed of seven major components:
1.    Computer hardware platforms include client machines and server machines, as well as modern mainframes produced by IBM. Blade servers are ultrathin servers, intended for a single dedicated application, and are mounted in space-saving racks.
2.    Operating system platforms include platforms for client computers, dominated by Windows operating systems, and servers, dominated by the various forms of the UNIX operating system or Linux. Operating systems are software that manage the resources and activities of the computer and act as an interface for the user.
3.    Enterprise and other software applications include SAP, Oracle, and PeopleSoft, and middleware software that are used to link a firm's existing application systems.
4.    Data management and storage is handled by database management software and storage devices include traditional storage methods, such as disk arrays and tape libraries, and newer network-based storage technologies such as storage area networks (SANs). SANs connect multiple storage devices on dedicated high-speed networks.
5.    Networking and telecommunications platforms include Windows server operating systems, Novell, Linux, and UNIX. Nearly all LAN and many wide area networks (WANs) use the TCP/IP standards for networking.
6.    Internet platforms overlap with, and must relate to, the firm's general networking infrastructure and hardware and software platforms. Internet-related infrastructure includes the hardware, software and services to maintain corporate Web sites, intranets, and extranets, including Web hosting services and Web software application development tools. A Web hosting service maintains a large Web server, or series of servers, and provides fee-paying subscribers with space to maintain their Web sites.
7. Consulting and system integration services are relied on for integrating a firm's legacy systems with new technology and infrastructure and providing expertise in implementing new infrastructure along with relevant changes in business processes, training, and software integration. Legacy systems are generally older transaction processing systems created for mainframe computers that continue to be used to avoid the high cost of replacing or redesigning them .
